city shots - thakur complex flyover / oberoi mall in festive mood

more visitors from out of the country - kausha / prashant and namrata

saturday kelwan and lunch

i guess every family has its rituals of bonding at family get-togethers. in my grandfathers side of the familiy it is the perpetual sarcasm and on my grandmothers it is the tongue in cheek parodies of all members of the clan. the ‘karyekram’ last night was a three part performance- the first a prize distribution ceremony complete with certificates and speeches, then the viju maushi/shirish maushi skit where they parodies themselves as saas’ with their punjabi bahus before launching into affectionate enough sketches abot everyone around. kumud maushi read two pieces- the first on her mother and the next on her annoyance with digital photography.

australia

epic like an out of africa in the outback, too self conscious about itself to actually believe in the soaring strings and aerial dramatic shots of landscapes; but still reasonable in the first half where an entire story is told. then in the second half the war sequences are messy clumsy and unnecessary, the aboriginal child and his grandfather make mystic lots and there is possible ending every ten minutes complete with mandatory heart string pulling shots from innumerable hollywood oscar hopefuls. besides everything i have had up to here with that maudlin sentimentality that is supposed to wash over me whenever i hear that annoying touchstone of american cinema ‘somewhere over the rainbow’. i have not seen the wizard of oz and never want to. and don’t care who did. if that is what the whiteys play to say that they love the brownies i dont want any part of that love.

jan 1 / tianna's birthday party

how do parents decide what to buy for their kids. toys are just terribly designed nowadays to make normal any differences the kid might exhibit from the norm. we could not find anything that we thought were flexible enough to allow the kid to play around with without expectations of the 'right' outcome. finally we settled for some cars that can be dragged around by tianna and a flute to make music on for joanna. it was tianna's birthday in the evening and john had transformed one of the rear courtyards of his building into a pink and white room. the street was jazzed up with lights making red and blue outlines of the branches and js himself was in a gorgeous shirt that only he can carry off with flair. shyam dressed up as santa and never had it so good with everyone vying for his attention. the food was fabulous as it was to be expected.

the new years party

In spite of it being all last minute and rapidly planned the new years party was a hit. After the harrowing year it had been we did not think we were in the mood for celebrating but there we were awake till 5 listening to 80s pop or dancing away to bappi lahiri.
Happy new year to all!
