batman : 'the hush'

the villains

perhaps what i speak here is sacrilege- always a sucker for the big star cast and the star vehicle, the batman comic ‘the hush’ was perfectly made for me. the star here was not the character but the artist- jim lee legendary from the x-men.

the graphic novel celebrated the newness of the vision to point where every single one of the batman’s friends and foes are roped into a convoluted conspiracy storyline where lee gets to draw the ‘dark knight’, robin, huntress, oracle, alfred, ra’s al ghul, talia, jim gordon, killer croc, lady shiva, harley quinn, nightwing, the joker, poison ivy, the riddler, the scarecrow, clayface, two-face, superman, lois lane- and especially and very lovingly the sexy catwoman.

the drawings are fabulous, the vision amazing but the somewhere the storyline and the characters don’t seem to be fully rounded. the weird eccentricities and the complicated relationships of the batman though always present as themes throughout the piece fade to the background as the narrative twists and turns suddenly introducing new characters and just as quickly removing them so that someone new can come along.

inescapable this is, I guess, when we try to squeeze every single thing out of a once in a lifetime opportunity. control, yaar!

sacrilege!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

you are not allowed to criticise hush!!!!

hush rohan hush!

ok but you have a point.
but....
BUT

what i love about hush is the fact that it is adult themed,or as its known the world over..a comic book for young adults
definitely not for kids.
the women are gorgeous, the men are heroes in every sense of the word, moral brigade n all
i dont think the storyline is lost, a bit wayward...yes, but you have to have read all the previous stories to get subtle references.
the plethora of villians and heroes..well being the young adult that you are, you are expected to know who everyone is.and more importantly at what stage of crimefighting & story telling it is.

in this new world of comic book, the creators writers, inkers, sketchers, editors etc have decided to make crime-fighting serious business.

the point is stressed that it's not just people running around with their underwear inside out.
they have a purpose.

i defend hush in it's attempt to not break away from cartoon tradition, but to take it to the next level.
and look proessional while doing it.
well....also..it doesnt hurt to look good while saving the world,yo.

also....hush is a return to more conventional drawings in terms of batman.
past few years have seen crossover/breakthrough styles of batman..artistic impressions and interpretations of batboob(as joker likes to call him)
so hush is a welcome change /return.

hail hush.

i want to hear what ninad has to say about this when he reads it.

the actual only true problem i do have with hush lies in jim lee's drawing.it's flawless....but it's the same face......his super man /flash gordon/aquaman/wolverine/batman/
and all heroes..who apparently can only have square jaws and thick necks.are all the SAME face.
the women have flawless cheekbones (and breasts)..and no apparent blemishes.
i probably just committed the greatest sacrilege by criticising jim lee's drawing style! how could i???
hush ranjit hush!

ok...... i feel better now....

hey there.. i do have a serious problem with the assumption that comic books have been written for kids.. i never thought so- i still dont. its just another form of storytelling that can be used to tell stories that are complicated and philosophical in nature.

though i cant think of any from the top of my head, i am sure i have read many others before 'the hush' that did it more successfully..

now youve gotten me into a corner where i am supposed to defend myself on my position on the book.. and i dont really want to disparage the book just to prove my point.

its a terrific read.. great fun- but in my opinion it could have been better.. thats all.

oyo boys!
i have not in so long read a comic that excited me. Everytime i pick one up i look at the grreat drawings and go ho-hum its allbeen done.

batman in the justice league- his secretiveness and "dark-side" so well respected it gets respectable. No heroes anymore they are all neurotic, domestic, jealous, bo-ring.

all become moral and stuffy with their political correctness/ with their standard brown/black persons and everyday heroes.

even the drawings and landscapes with those deep shadows overdone drama, rona, which i know you still like i cannot take.. i know rona, you like those still.

The only really entertaining ones have been- the 2d cartoony justice league comics with fantastic plots and lots of humour. And they have great drawings! the two-page crazy drawings with millions of things happening.

And one catwoman going sobbingly passionate and violent onher way to save some animals set aside for testing...

I love the old silly kids stuff with redunderweared superman supergood and superrunreal.

rona...
not my intention to push you into a corner...
my superhero obsession forced to leap(across buildings) to defend hush.
:)

yes, was never said comicbooks were for kids.i agree with thatand with you for most part.hush's creators just reiterate that point, thats all.

although, every book ever written could have been better.

anyways, batman is interesting because he has no powers.
so lee's take on it was even more so.

sonu!
batman in justice league. exactly!!!
i love him in that!
read tower of babel ....where he gets the weakness of each superhero in the league so that if armageddon happens, he will be the last one standing, but the baddy villians use his info to clone all the superheros to take them all down, one by one...
batman chooses to reveal his identity to the league in that one.
at the end of it all..
(ok ok, ill try not to be so excited by the story)

what i like in these new comics is that all the heroes dont get along.
superman and batman are ideally friends, but in reality(comic book ,of course),they are just civil to each other because they dont agree with each other's idealogies.
but they come close to being friends,sometimes...
i get a kick out of knowing that.
and reading it.

comic books to me are about capturing that one moment.
if ,in each block the vision is seen.
it's already successful to me.
great story or not.

rona, point noted,not conceded :)
sona, you are adorable!

superhero pj:
what's green and colossal and sits in a corner all day?
