Madras. Pa Ranjith. 2014.
The architecture of the state built housing scheme where the lower caste lives is the possible stepping stone towards the erasure of caste, but it is also the object of a turf war between warring factions when a wall of a building is fought over as a statement of identity. The housing project with its terraces, staircase landings, cramped rooms painted pink but with the Dalit blue peeking from underneath are the locations for gang wars, b-boys, football, love and friendship until the unnecessary single hero beats up everyone climax. A way out of caste can only exist through education and by turning away from politics- or so it seems, especially at the end when Kaali wears a blue shirt and teaches kids under a portrait of Ambedkar.
