Sao Paolo Modernism

i was told that the sao paolo modernism is far more muscular than the rio version. and it was. rcc frame high rises marked by graffiti in the inner city streets.

Sao Paolo: Municipal Theatre and the Sunken Square / The Three Dimensional Road System

the exotic municipal theatre where the conference was to be held lies on a square that was perhaps once a river. now it is a road that turns into a public space accessed by stairs leading down from the road above. sao paolo has this three dimensional road system that flew above the older contours of the city. you climbed up or down into different worlds by these steep stairs connecting different levels.

Sao Paolo: Ze

the church square with the homeless sleeping on the stairs, the brown water fountain.

Sao Paolo: Praca de Republica

Sao Paolo: Circolo Italiano

at the corner of the praca de republica, this elegant rcc beauty. slinky and sexy.

Sao Paolo: The Municipal Stadium (Pacaembu Stadium)

From the window in the hotel, in the fancy part of town, the municipal stadium is an art deco classic that used to be the place for the football matches until the clubs moved out to the periphery. now it lies largely under utilised. while i watched fireworks and celebrations started and streams of teenager ran out to waiting buses and took them home.

phoenix . tangerine . sixth happiness

in the german post-holocaust trauma film the phoenix rises by imitation. she finds her own self by pretending to be be herself. her husband who betrayed her helps her become her self again. she walks out at the end.
tangerine lives in a perpetual periphery- a space of constant desire to become fixed and stable. the film celebrates these tawdry spaces-  between man and woman, between family and freedom, between city and suburb with a playful eroticism.
half-man trying to grow. a sentimental story about a controlling mother, a tired father, a loving sister, a betraying lover- the formula is pretty predictable. and of course everyone leaves- some die, some disappear. kanga plays himself as a child and as an adult. this might have been interesting if the filmmaker took the cliche driven narrative and pushed up the melodrama. unfortunately, it is tv drama at its most ordinary.

Nizamuddin Dargah

Into a labyrinth of colour and smell, densely packed bodies heading to the lit central courtyard, where worshippers whisper and moan in the silence far away from the traffic of the main road, waiting for the azaan of id-e-milad.
