the spectacular middle class tackiness of it all was fascinating. all the usual signifiers of the mall were around but twisted and turned into new forms that bring to mind the borders of polyester saris or the prints of terrycot shirts in the shopping complexes near borivili station. the stainless steel railing is a snake, the ceramic tiled floor wants to be italian marble with inlay work, the composite aluminum cladding has mirrorwork like a dupatta, around the lift doors patterns evoke a darvaza in a haveli; and in the atrium ringing with the sounds of loud voices surrounded by the flashing triple heighted tetris lighted colored wall a miniature of a hut of a poor farmer is made in cardboard with warli paintings on the surface.
it’s a madhouse of meanings and associations that i cant even begin to decipher. where are the semiologists when you need them?
