A bid for the Oscars to be successful must have the requisite amount of white man guilt, complete with archetypical white man hero who loves injuns- even though they seem like extensions of the gorgeous landscape- as beautiful, savage, mystical victims.
Our hero must also be a family man- no less, who will stop at nothing to avenge his family when our archetypical villain, money minded, brutal, kills the son and leaves him for dead.
Man against nature and meditations on a Christian God American style in steadicam swirls with lens flares through forests and gazing at trees fall flat- in spite of the pretensions of Tarkovsky references.
