faces

in john cassavetes’ “faces” the women take on their assigned role of comforter uneasily as the insecurities of middle aged men tear at the seams of all relationships. the men meet up with a call girl at her suburban home and the women, after a raucous party, with a young blonde dancer boy. it is the men who have the prerogative of moving free while the women wait patiently at home. as boredom and sexual insecurities build the camera restlessly scans the expressions and gestures of people caught up in the turmoil of finding love and consolation in and out of a marriage. fantastic film – manic, ragged and disturbing but still able to make human what could have been mere caricatures of type.
