in paro’s new film in real life and in its various televised versions the goons who protect our morality from corruption thrive and prosper under the gaze of the television camera. the tv camera loves the sensational, as we all know, and adores the titillating. it comes to aiding and abetting the policing of public life, even though it claims to “expose” the evils of police callousness as it brings with it the seduction of 15 minutes of fame to the policewoman who randomly slaps in the face a young girl walking through the park. signboards warn against roaming, hanging around and playing in the park. pray tell me, what the hell are they for then? and of course it is the men who seem to be talking the most about culture and value systems. as they are more and more outraged by the allegedly lewd behavior of young people, the women seem to don a prim prudishness. they adopt the outraged tone of the middle aged betraying the desires of young people everywhere. even more scary is when this fear of the destructive nature of desire clludes with an intrinsic distrust born out a communal divide. muslim boys are accused of seducing nubile hindu girls and carrying out a ‘loving jehad’, which not only seems ridiculous but doubly insults the intelligence of the hindu girls.
