Miracleman. Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman.
The Alan Moore reboot of Marvel Man in the 80’s made the original Marvel man as a 50’s throwback- quaint nostalgia for stick figure characters and easily identifiable villains and heroes, and turned the story darker and stranger for contemporary times. The miracle family has forgotten it’s magic words and discovers its memories have all been manufactured from comic books- the ultimate simplistic yarn. When realisation strikes and the gods rise again, London is razed to the ground in a body count like no other and is then resurrected as a glorious Mount Olympus where the gods live. Democracy is dismantled, as is money and every other evil, but somehow people do not seem happier. The Neil Gaiman end does not quite end before it stops abruptly in the middle of a story.
