yi lan - huang sheng yuan - the war museum

yi lan is a small town on the east coast of taiwan separated from the capital taipei by mountains. the drive used to be a longer one until a tunnel was drilled connecting the two cities. now the distance is only an hours drive.

the city lies sandwiched between the hills on the west and the pacific on the east. lying on flat land it claims an independence of sorts from the rest of the country. and that independence is seen even in the work of huang sheng yaun- whose field office is involved in creating inventive and unique visions for public space and infrastructure in the city.

one of the first buildings we went to is a war museum that swirls like a circling airplane as it heads towards an inevitable death. the museum is dug half underground and porthole windows imitate bomb shell wounds. in the courtyard formed a replica airplane still sits as decoy to american planes.
