Kabali. Pa.Ranjith. 2016.
Rajnikanth swagger in the service of Dalit pride in the rambling foil of a drug lord revenge drama. I am sure there were references that I was not getting- cinematic and political. There seemed to be another film entirely hidden inside the main text, a film of displacement and migration, of costumes and identity, of the impossibility of escape. The detour into India of the Malaysian farm labourer to find his long lost love meanders through disappointments in colonial upper caste bungalows near the Ambedkar memorial, in American suburbs, on beach houses and only finally ends on the gate of private property - Auroville - another displaced people. In all of this deadly serious stuff the star swagger is muted.
