the merchant of four seasons

in fassbinders ‘merchant of four seasons’ a posture becomes an emotion- much like in bharatnatyam. .the story seemed to be told in a series of short elaborate movements and expressions by actors in a deliberately artificial sets. or rather artificialised sets. the characters are almost figurines and statues sculpted like the characters in a drama from ancient greece. the pose struck is itself beauty, seduction, remorse, longing. the story followed a fruit vendor who loves his job in spite of his bourgeois family’s disapproval find himself to be a reluctant capitalist due to an accident that makes him incapable of walking the streets and carrying loads. this anxiety leads him to drink himself to death. great film.
