are sad love stories the only love stories worth remembering? the only ones that move me?

can someone tell me one great one where the lovers meet at the end? - a "happily ever after" affair?

An affair to remember
(however cliched it might have become, and however badly remade; the original was and is still a grand movie)

notorious
cary grant walking into that mansion....and scooping ingrid bergman up..almost like a schoolboy stealing candy, and walking out of that house defiantly/stubbornly,somehow struck me.
but i was 11.

there are more i think, but i cant think of them now, these two sprang to mind.

maybe its just me and my tendency for the fatally romantic- but an affair to remember really did not do much for me. notorius perhaps.. but wasnt it more of a thirller of sorts?

i know an affair to remember didnt do much for you,you told me once. :)

but youre right about notorious,it was a thriller, but i fixated on your last sentence i guess.

come to think of it....rereading your lines, i wonder why i only thought of movies....it could be any format actually, na?

can't think of any happy films that left as lasting an impression as tragedies do.. actually many of the happy films i like have characters with some sad shades, even if they eventually live happily ever after.. also, happy films never really win the big awards..

'the english patient' a film with all that gorgeous lush desert illegitimate love
'the remains of the day' - antony hopkins' desperate longing under the stiff sterile mask of the faithful servant

are we all just incredibly masochistic? or do happy people crave sadness as sad people long for some joy?

Did you ever see "Serendipity" with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale? A fairly ordinary movie but for reasons rather close to my fragile heart, the story was very compelling. That scene where she throws a cashmere glove on him at the skating rink and they steal a kiss ... Ahhh! If you haven't seen it, then I highly recommend it -- a total 'masala' romantic popcorn flick.

john cusack is quite the romantic hero. 'say anything' was all awww...

'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' is what left an impression on me... kate winslet and jim carrey... i think i have discussed this film with you....

i agree with prerna. 'eternal sunshine...' is very close to my heart. i thought 'titanic' was a good romantic movie with a happy ending. i remember there were tears of joy in my eyes when the end credits started rolling.

i think we tend to dismiss happy love stories as 'pure mush', or 'sappy'? there have to be some that are not corny, or clawingly cute in that meg ryan kind of way. i too get tears in my eyes after watching 'the sound of music' or something.
