aaja nachle

she still has the ability to be the only one you watch on screen even if she is in one corner of it. your eyes find her all the time. after the promos i was a little underwhelmed by the ordinariness of the ‘look’. so sheenless. and after the film i realize how unnecessary any gloss was. when you have star charisma like that who needs an overproduced overdone star vehicle like ‘om shanti om’. although i did cringe when the american accent appeared in the beginning as soon as she got into her ghagra the oomph overcame all. oh those thumkas! no contemporary can imagine coming close.

and what a nice film! i was quite surprised by how much i liked it. i was not expecting to. very nicely made, effortless and has a story - this being quite unusual for a film that is so big. it was feel good and warm with a great supporting cast from akshaye khanna as the ‘bad guy’ to vinay and ranvir to divya dutta, kunal kapoor and konkona sen sharma. the music was not too bad either. with the title track she has another big dance in her repertoire. the ‘laila majnu’ opera worked enough for me for its daring and in spite of its length. 'aaja nachle' was so much better than all the big hyped films that came out around diwali. and i was not the only one who thought so. the audience of gujju families and dating couples at raghuleela sat rapt until the final credit had rolled. so there.
