the one day drive up north from muzaffarnagar to the mountains led along a canal as we avoided the main highway for fear of traffic. by passing haridwar on the way we headed directly for hrishikesh where the beatles spent their time in india. i mention this because this is where the predominantly white tourists spent their time in the this region. the ganga flows cold and white as tourists from delhi white water raft down the river. form the layman pul that swings above the river you can watch them drift past way below. the town is a collection of cheap hotels and massage parlours, tie die t shirt shops and handicrafts designed to please the foreigner. the waterfalls in the mountain were beautiful but filled with men in their underwear drinking beer and posing for photographs with the white girls in the pools.
