gwalior - bateshwar temple complex

an exquisite beginning to the holiday. the bateswar temple complex near the village of padavli. terraces rise with temples that are lovingly being reconstructed through their parts by the asi. fragments of many more still lie scattered. a water tank collects water from the surrounding hills and in the main shrine locals still worship shiva. a bright orange hanuman statue looks like it has been installed to hinduize the space. in a fort-like house inside the complex a caretaker sits.

outside the main temple complex is a all plinth upon which another temple lies waiting to be restored.

These are wonderful pictures -a testimony of ancient knowledge and skills executed with confidence and conviction. Many of these values have unfortunately remained as a faded memory.
