Char Adhyay. Kumar Shahani. 1997.

Tagore’s criticism of the independence movement’s emphasis on sacrifice for nation over the freedom of the individual. The nation as woman, mother, lover, or the nation as the willingness of passionate young men to sacrifice everything, including itself- for an idea? In bourgeois Calcutta mansions Ela is caught in mirrors, in windows, in faded bedrooms, in hesitating gestures and shots that repeat and revolve, between her fascination for the fire in the revolutionary’s voice and her fatal love that draws unwilling Atin into the fight.
