Domestic Modern. Abigail McGowan.

Interesting to watch the desire to perform modern living in pre independent India seen through 1930s consumer advertising culled from various archives. This seemed like the desire of the urban bourgeoisie to perform through wearing the images of modernity ‘radical’ transformations that in actuality keep the structures that keep them secure at the top intact, permanent and timeless- the antithesis of 'all that is solid melts into air’ - what the modern was supposed to achieve, no?
